There are many free resources online , and more African students should be taking advantage of these resources by focusing on meeting the criteria to benefit from these.

USA

1.Foreign Fulbright Program – Foreign Student Program (fulbrightonline.org)

Deadline: Feb-Oct 2021(annual) and Course starts 2022 /2023

Available each year to approximately 4000 masters and PhD students who want to study in the USA. This grant covers tuition, living expenses, health insurance and even your airfare . It covers all cost for the entire duration of the program. If you are a young student, artist or young professional, this is for you.

Canada

1.International Scholars – UBC | Undergraduate Programs and Admissions

Deadline: 1 Dec 2021 (annual) and Course starts 2022

The Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award recognizes recognizes international undergraduate students who demonstrate superior academic achievement, leadership skills, involvement in student affairs and community service, and recognized achievement in other key areas.All international students are eligible for undergraduate degrees offered by UBC

2.The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarships | Future Students. University of Toronto | University of Toronto (utoronto.ca)

Deadline: Jan 2022 (annual)

The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program at the University of Toronto is intended to recognize international students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and creativity and who are recognized as leaders within their school. A special emphasis is placed on the impact the student has had on the life of their school and community, and their future potential to contribute positively to the global community. It covers tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence support for four years.

Switzerland

1.Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Scholars and Artists for the 2022-2023 Academic Year (admin.ch)

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or PhD and at foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree. The scholarship covers a monthly allowance, tuition fees, health insurance, lodging allowance, etc.

2. Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme – Student portal | ETH Zurich

Deadline: 15 Dec 2021 (annual) and Course starts Fall 2022

ETH Zurich supports excellent students wishing to pursue a Master’s degree at ETH with the Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme (ESOP). The grant covers living and study expenses (CHF 12’000 per semester) as well as a tuition fee waiver through the regular duration of the Master’s programme (three or four semesters). You must have very good result in their Bachelor’s (top 10% of Bachelor’s programme = grade A). You also need to make sure to be reachable on the telephone number specified in your CV as the selection process might include a phone/VC interview in February.

Sweden

1.Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals | Swedish Institute

The Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals (SISGP), a new scholarship programme which replaces the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) offers scholarships to a large number of master’s programmes at Swedish Universities in the Autumn semester 2021.It covers tuition fees, living expenses of SEK 10,000 per month, insurance, and a one-time travel grant of SEK 15,000 (only for scholarship holders living outside Sweden. African Students from Cameroon;Ecuador; Egypt; Ethiopia; Gambia; Ghana;Kenya; Liberia; Malawi; Morocco; Nigeria; Rwanda; ; Sudan; Tanzania; Uganda; Zambia; Zimbabwe.

Netherlands

1.Maastricht University Holland-High Potential scholarship – Maastricht University

The Maastricht University (UM) Holland-High Potential Scholarship programme offers 24 full scholarships of €29.000 (including tuition fee waiver and monthly stipend) each academic year for highly talented students from outside the European Union (EU) who have been admitted to a Master’s programme at UM.

To apply for the scholarship, you must first register for one of the participating Master’s Programme (MA) at Maastricht University. Once you have submitted your application via Studielink, you will receive a student ID number which you will need in order to complete and submit the Scholarship Application Form. 

All African nationals who are not dual nationals of any EU/EEA country are eligible

2. Eric Bleumink Fund | Education | University of Groningen (rug.nl)

The Eric Bleumink Fund awards scholarships to talented students and young researchers from developing countries.  The scholarships are towards a 1 year or 2  Master Programmes (MSc/MA/LL.M.) offered at University of Groningen. It covers tuition fee, costs of international travel, subsistence, books, and health insurance for year 1 and 2 of the master’s program.

3.Education – University of Amsterdam (uva.nl)

The Amsterdam Excellence Scholarships (AES) awards scholarships to exceptionally talented students from Non- EU/EEA to pursue eligible Master’s Programmes offered at the University of Amsterdam. A full scholarship of €25,000 (covering tuition and living expenses) for one academic year with the possibility of extension for a second year for two-year Master’s programmes.



United Kingdom

1.Chevening

Deadline Nov 2021 Course starts Sept/Oct 2022

Around 1,500 scholarships globally will be offered.

Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The programme offers awards to outstanding scholars with leadership potential from around the world to study for a master’s degree in any subject at any UK university.A Chevening Scholarship normally covers university tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, an economy class return airfare to the UK, and additional grants and allowances to cover essential expenditure.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must:

•  Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.

•  Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your scholarship has ended

• Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university by the time you submit your application. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK but may be different depending on your course and university choice.

• Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.

• Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 15 July 2022.

Applications for Chevening Awards can only be submitted using the Chevening online application system, available through the ‘apply’ button on your country’s page. The deadline for applications is 2 November 2021 at 12:00 GMT (midday).

2.International Scholarship at The University of Cambridge (gatescambridge.org)

Deadline: 13 Oct/ Dec 2021/ Jan 22 (annual) and Course starts Oct 2022

The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are one of the most prestigious international scholarships in the world. Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. PhD, MSc or MLitt, or a one year postgraduate course in any subject offered at the University.PhD, MSc or MLitt, or a one year postgraduate course in any subject offered at the University. covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge including tuition fees, maintenance allowance, travel costs, visa, etc. It also provides additional, discretionary funding such as academic development funding, family allowance, fieldwork

3.Chancellor’s International Scholarship (warwick.ac.uk)

The Chancellor’s International Scholarships are allocated annually via a combined postgraduate research scholarship competition and are open to all International and EU students in any discipline offered at Warwick.

4.Clarendon | University of Oxford

The Clarendon Fund is a major graduate scholarship scheme at the University of Oxford, offering around 140 new scholarships every year. Clarendon Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and potential across all degree-bearing subjects at graduate level at the University of Oxford. Covers annual living cost right for up to £15000.

Australia

1.Global Academic Excellence Scholarship (International) 2021-2025 | International Students | University of Adelaide

The 2021-2025 University of Adelaide Global Academic Excellence Scholarship (International) is a highly competitive award that rewards commencing undergraduate and postgraduate coursework international students who have demonstrated academic excellence in previous studies. Available for Bachelors and Masters programs.Each Faculty will award only two scholarships of a 50% reduction of the tuition fee to the applicant in their faculty with the highest score above an ATAR of 98 or GPA of 6.8.
