Embrace Independence: No One Will Be in Your Life Forever

10 lessons learned series in honour of my 34th Birthday.

by Sylvie Tamanda

When I was 16, my dad left for work and never came back due to a ghastly accident that claimed his life. I have had my fair share of people walk out of my life, both voluntarily and involuntarily.

Many nights I went to bed and soaked my pillows with tears, fell asleep, and woke up to the reality of the world—nothing had changed, and the onus was on me to renew my faith in myself to live with every curve ball life throws at me.

You see, in the journey of life, we encounter numerous individuals who leave indelible marks on our hearts and minds. From family and friends to mentors and partners, these connections shape our experiences and contribute to our growth.

However, it’s essential to recognise that no one will be in our lives forever. This realisation underscores the importance of striving for independence that is not reliant on anyone outside ourselves.

Dependency on others, while natural and often comforting, can inadvertently hinder personal growth and resilience.

Relying solely on external sources for happiness, validation, or support can leave us vulnerable to disappointment and setbacks when those relationships inevitably evolve or come to an end. Instead, fostering a sense of self-reliance empowers us to navigate life’s challenges with strength and authenticity.

Being independent doesn’t imply shutting others out or rejecting the value of relationships. It means understanding that our happiness, success, and emotional well-being should not solely depend on someone else’s presence or actions.

It is about cultivating a deep sense of self-worth, inner strength, and the ability to make decisions and take responsibility for our own lives.

Striving for independence requires self-reflection and personal development. It involves developing skills, pursuing passions, and nurturing a healthy self-image.

Investing in our own growth and learning helps us become self-sufficient individuals capable of achieving our goals and finding fulfilment from within.

Moreover, independence enhances our relationships rather than detracting from them. When we are self-reliant, we can engage with others from a place of authenticity, contributing our unique perspectives and strengths to the connection.

It allows us to form healthier, more balanced relationships based on mutual respect, support, and growth rather than dependency.

Remember, life is a dynamic journey where people come and go. Embracing the understanding that no one will be with us forever is not meant to evoke sadness but rather to inspire personal growth and resilience.

By striving for independence, we create a solid foundation within ourselves, enabling us to adapt, thrive, and continue growing even as circumstances and relationships change.

So, cherish the connections you have, but also nurture the relationship you have with yourself. Cultivate independence, self-belief, and the courage to embrace life’s uncertainties.

You are capable of achieving great things and finding lasting happiness, irrespective of who comes and goes along the way.
