Change is an undeniable and unavoidable aspect of life. From the ebb and flow of relationships to the evolution of personal circumstances, change is the only constant we can rely on.
Amidst the ups and downs, it’s important to remember that no situation is permanent. If there are aspects of your life that you don’t like, you have the power to change them.
Lesson 10, which is the last lesson of our countdown to my 34th birthday, explores the empowering concept of embracing change and taking control of your own destiny.
“Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future”.
-John F. Kennedy
Story Time
In life, we often face criticism and judgement for the choices we make. Some may label us as selfish or overly ambitious, questioning our decisions and even calling into question our ability to be good parents. But what did we do to deserve such slurring? The truth is, sometimes we need to take charge of our own lives and make uncomfortable decisions that go against societal expectations. As I share my personal journey of embracing change, defying norms, and pursuing my dreams, even when faced with criticism, I hope it inspires you to do the same.
Exactly 34 years ago today, I was born in Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon. And after being around for thirty-four years, I am not too young to teach you a thing or two about my experiences, nor am I too young to learn from my people, books, podcasts, videos, and situations.
I was confronted with a major change when I found out I was pregnant with my son. Faced with my new reality, I made a conscious decision to embrace unconventional choices, follow my heart, and adapt to change in order to live out my dreams.
Life took an unexpected turn when I lost my father at the age of 16. That tragic event marked me and turned my world upside down. It became the driving force behind the decisions, habits, and choices that have shaped my life ever since.
Before I found out I was pregnant, I had always aspired to obtain my MBA before the age of 30, as a promise I made to my late father. I started my studies at the German University of Cairo and then received an opportunity to pursue another MBA programme in London. However, as fate would have it, I discovered I was expecting a baby just as I was preparing for my journey to London.
With conflicting emotions, I had to make a decision. Should I cancel my programme and prioritise my newborn, or should I follow through with my lifelong ambition and the promise I made to my father? After much prayer, tears, and tight embraces with my baby, I made the difficult choice to continue with my studies in London.
Arriving in London, I faced numerous challenges. My journey was marked by leaky breasts, filled with milk and pain, and a longing to nurture my baby. The bond between mother and child was so strong that I could feel his cries from miles away. The first few weeks were emotionally and mentally challenging. I carried a few of his clothes to keep his scent close, shedding tears in class and on bus rides. But I was determined to create a better future for both my children and myself.
While my physical presence would have made a difference, I had to consider the cost. Sacrificing my dreams and resenting my baby’s birth due to societal expectations was not the path I wanted to take. I knew there would never be a perfect time, so I seized the opportunity that presented itself. I dedicated myself to my studies by avoiding distractions and focusing on my books.
My hard work paid off, as I graduated with distinction, achieving top grades in all my modules. I maintained contact with my baby through video calls and made sure to visit him during breaks. This experience taught me that women don’t have to put their lives on hold for anyone, not even their children or society’s expectations. Striking a healthy balance is challenging but possible.
In facing difficult decisions and challenging situations, it’s important to remember that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. You are stronger than you can imagine, and everything will be alright when you follow the path less travelled with the right motives. Keep your eyes on the big picture and believe in your own greatness.
We often face criticism and judgement for making unconventional choices. However, when we follow our hearts, pursue our dreams, and defy societal norms, we discover our true strength and resilience. Don’t wait for the perfect time to live your dreams. Embrace change, make those uncomfortable decisions, and believe in the greatness within you. Remember, everything will be alright when you choose the path that aligns with your true desires and motivations.

1. Acknowledging the Impermanence of Situations
The first step in embracing change is recognising that no situation is permanent. Life is in a constant state of flux, presenting us with new opportunities, challenges, and experiences.
Realising that circumstances can evolve and improve allows us to break free from the limitations of stagnation and embrace the potential for positive change.
2. Identifying Areas for Improvement
Take a moment to reflect on your life and identify areas that you’re unhappy with. It could be your career, relationships, health, or personal growth.
Pinpointing the specific aspects that need transformation empowers you to formulate a plan and take action.
3. Setting Goals and Creating a Plan
Once you’ve identified the areas for change, it’s time to set goals and create a plan. Define what you want to achieve and outline the steps required to reach your desired outcome. Break your goals into manageable tasks and set deadlines to stay motivated and accountable.
4. Embracing Growth and Learning
Change often requires stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing growth. Be open to new experiences, acquire new skills, and seek knowledge that aligns with your goals. Embracing a mindset of continuous learning and personal development sets the stage for transformative change.
5. Taking Action and Persevering
Change doesn’t happen overnight. It requires consistent effort and perseverance. Take actionable steps towards your goals, even if they seem small at first.
Celebrate every milestone along the way, and don’t let setbacks discourage you. Remember, change is a journey, and each step forward brings you closer to the life you desire.
6. Cultivating Resilience and Adaptability
As you navigate through change, it’s crucial to cultivate resilience and adaptability. Life may throw unexpected curveballs, but by developing a resilient mindset, you can bounce back stronger. Embrace the ability to adapt to new circumstances, find creative solutions, and view challenges as opportunities for growth.
7. Seeking Support and Surrounding Yourself with Positivity
Change can be daunting, and having a support system is invaluable. Surround yourself with positive influences, whether it’s friends, family, or mentors who believe in your ability to create change. Seek guidance, advice, and encouragement from those who uplift and inspire you.
To conclude our lesson series, I’d like to remind you that change is the only constant in life, and embracing it gives you the power to transform your circumstances. By acknowledging the impermanence of situations, identifying areas for improvement, setting goals, and taking action, you can shape the life you desire.
