How She Started Her Business At 19

The Power of Coaching and Mentoring

by Sylvie Tamanda

Today I want to talk to you all about an extraordinary young woman I came across in 2021.

Her name is Immaculate Chidera. She is the epitome of what I refer to as a determined person who is eager to not only live but to make an impact and to live a life of greatness.

When I first met Imma, she was just an ordinary young woman whose aspirations were to go to school, get good grades, make her parents proud, apply for work, get married, have kids, and live happily ever after.

To the ordinary man, there’s absolutely wrong with Imma’s goals; however, I saw more than just ordinary in Imma. I saw greatness in her.

As I observed all the young people in my group, I took special notice of Imma. She was very intentional with everything she did and said.

And as the days went by under my mentorship, Imma realised that everything she wanted to achieve in her life became clearer and clearer.

Immaculate was among the young girls who started the young and independent project back in July 2021. And I remember that she was actually the second person to join the WhatsApp group when it was first created by her friend Rosio.

Rosio, the original founder of the group, fell off course, and we hardly hear from her these days, but the group is gradually turning into a movement.

Did she accomplish her mission? There’s a saying that people come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Is this true for the creator of the young and independent WhatsApp community group? I wish I had the answer to that question.

But what I sure know the answer to is that Imma stayed the course, she listened, and she took action. And as the days went by under my mentorship, Imma realised that everything she wanted to achieve in her life became clearer and clearer.

The results of her resilience and obedience can be seen in what she has accomplished so far.

After the community was launched, I took the then-members of the WhatsApp group on a 5-week journey.

A journey to self-discovery and through a vision-creation experience It was an experience that I wanted them to have. It was an experience that I wanted to change their lives with.

Imma knew all too well that she didn’t have to play with this information. She took it, and she ran with it.

As I write this, the once ordinary girl Imma has made extra progress in her life. And she has gone on to change her story. Check out her Facebook business page Imma’s pastry corner | Douala | Facebook

I did absolutely nothing but point her in the right direction. And anything that she’s been able to accomplish has come from her and her desire to be great.

What I tell my young mentees is that life is what we make of it, and the choices that we make spice up our lives for better or for worse.

Being a part of a community like the Young and Independent community, where they get coached for free, is not equal to success or greatness. But they will only be able to work in line with their higher selves and higher purposes if they take action and do what they need to do to live the life they want.

A lot of young people in Africa have one goal in mind, and that goal is to leave the shores of the continent. They have this big dream about life abroad. And they wouldn’t listen to anything else except when someone handed them a passport and said, “It’s time to board a plane to America; you’ve got your visa; get out of here.” They prefer comedy or gossip time over education and learning a new skill.

But I repeatedly tell my mentees one thing: I tell them that the grass is only greener where you water it. I remind him that life abroad is not very different from life in Africa.

And that, while it may be more difficult for them due to socioeconomic and geopolitical factors beyond their control, they can still achieve great things.

Today I am proud of Imma because she’s proven that no one is or should be limited by their circumstances, skin colour, family of birth, or location.

She broke past her limiting beliefs and started watering the grass where she was standing by doing the following:

* Seeking the right community

* Putting her knowledge into practise

* Investing in herself

* Maintaining the momentum

And I am so proud to see that her grass is getting greener every passing day.

Any young person who strives to follow Imma’s path should do the following:

#1 Double down on personal development.

#2. Maintain mental fortitude

#3. Seek membership in a community of people that share the same level of ambition and values.

#4. Develop a strong ability to listen and act upon the information that she has gotten.

#5. Maintain consistency in everything you do.

#6. Pursue the path of impact with the belief that income will follow.

#7. Building quality relationships with the people in your community

#8. Seeking guidance from those who have wisdom and have walked the path you want to follow

#9. Have an insatiable hunger for knowledge.

#10. Trust in God for guidance, enlightenment, grace, peace, health, joy, and fulfilment.
