How Important is coaching for business owners?

by Sylvie Tamanda

Today, I had a coaching session with the managing director of a medium-sized company that runs under the Youth Employability Program of the African Development Bank, which is funded by donors.

I requested an overview of his business at the start of our conversation, including what they do, how they do it, where and when they do it, and for whom. Due to confidentiality concerns, I am unable to disclose precise details regarding this company.

However, after the introduction, I gained a comprehensive understanding of his business. Then, I enquired about the greatest obstacle facing his company and its business objectives.

He stated that their primary challenge is hiring and maintaining talented personnel, due to the lack of interest of millennials and Generation Z in agricultural projects.

He stated that their primary challenge is hiring and maintaining talented personnel, due to the lack of interest of millennials and Generation Z in agricultural projects.  oth recognized that the lack of personnel is impeding the company’s expansion.

Thus, we concentrated on developing a human resources procedure that speaks the language of the younger workforce.

I offered more than five suggestions, including approaching local agricultural colleges and universities to recruit passionate students and making agriculture more popular through social media marketing and corporate social responsibility initiatives.

We also highlighted the company’s concessions, such as offering flexible work hours, vacations, freebies, and swag, to attract its target audience.

After our first session was over, a new date was agreed upon to review progress, implementation, and any difficulties encountered.

My highlight for the meeting was the excitement in the Managing Director’s voice as he expressed his gratitude for the 2 hours spent together. He was now looking forward to implement recommended innovative solutions to a problem that had stiffled his company’s growth for several years.

This is the essence of coaching: having a sounding board, someone to think and innovate alongside you while providing guidance and signposts for reaching your business’s objectives.
