What is the African Impact Challenge all about? 

The main goal of the African Impact Challenge is to support the development of the African continent by investing in its early-stage innovators. The objective is to support and establish entrepreneurial ideas that create market-disrupting innovations that leverage technology to address their country’s most significant challenges.

The African Impact Challenge has trained and funded over 500 African entrepreneurs since its inception, with over 80 receiving funding. The challenge has been held in Ghana (2020), Kenya (2021), and Rwanda (2022), with the introduction of a pan-African health entrepreneurship stream in 2022. This year, the challenge is in South Africa, and top-performing teams will receive up to $25,000 in grant funding or SAFE investment and an all-expenses-paid trip to Toronto. The challenge aims to launch innovations that align with selection criteria by providing capital, resources, and guidance to early founders.

About the previous African Impact Challenges.


In the year 2022, the challenged was extended to include Rwanda for the sector-agnostic category and introduced a Pan-African Health Entrepreneurship category. The pre-incubation program trained more than 500 early-stage entrepreneurs from 20 African countries for both categories. During 2021, the initiative provided capacity building and training to more than 300 early-stage entrepreneurs in Kenya through the pre-incubation program. As part of “The 2020 Challenge,” a pilot program was launched in Ghana where 92 applications were received.  11 first-time founders were selected to participate in a paid summer incubator program that helped bring their innovative ideas to life and prepare them for the market. What is the Prosperity Paradox all about? 

Global poverty is a complex issue that has yet to be solved despite decades of efforts. The current approach often relies on trial and error, flooding poor countries with resources and hoping to see change over time. However, this strategy is not effective, and in some cases, has worsened the problem.

In “The Prosperity Paradox”, Clayton M. Christensen offers a new approach to solving poverty based on entrepreneurship and market-creating innovation. Using successful examples from America’s economic development, as well as other regions such as Japan, South Korea, Nigeria, Rwanda, India, Argentina, and Mexico, the book shows how the right kind of innovation can not only build companies but also countries. This is a call to action for anyone who wants to make the world a better and more prosperous place.

The initiative seeks to support early-stage innovators in Africa who are capable of producing market-creating innovations that leverage technology to address critical issues in their respective countries.

The program started on the 1st of April 2023 with a self-paced Pre-incubation phase. After this, the best-performing ventures will be selected for funding and incubation.


How can I win the $25000 African Impact Challenge Grant?

The organizer has stated that the proposed ideas must offer a comprehensive solution to a recognized problem or challenge in the country. Additionally, the solution must be technology-enabled and preferably target non-consumption by increasing adoption, accessibility, or affordability. Innovative and scalable business models will be given preference.

Each successful team will receive up to $25,000 in either grant funding or a simple agreement for future equity (SAFE) investment. They will also be provided with an all-expenses-paid three-month visit to Toronto in the summer to network and learn about entrepreneurship.
